Contemporary dance and chamber music come together in this adaptation of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle for piano, voice and dance.
Inspired by the historical Schubertiades, informal gatherings during which Schubert played the piano for his poet, singer, musician and painter friends, Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a long, emotion-filled Romantic poem about the power of nature, suffering, pain, death and love. The music masterfully expresses the various moods, and the text is narrative, even contemplative. Through Franz Schubert’s Winterreise and movement, José Navas tells the story of a journey to the edges of winter. Accompanied onstage by a singer and pianist, he creates a stunning choreographic performance that is effervescent and beautiful.
